January won’t last forever. The days are slowly growing longer, the mornings a little brighter, and here are my tips for enjoying the month. Treat yourself to the simple comforts of a hot cuppa, a warm fire and enjoy the quiet reassurance of life’s small pleasures. This year, I gave Lord T a lino print kit for Christmas, and he has been beavering away at a likeness of his beloved Bengal cat, “Billy the Kit” (below). I’ve never known him so quiet, absorbed in his work, surrounded by little curls of cut lino. Watching the pattern slowly emerge is oddly calming, and it struck me that January calls for much the same approach: a gentler pace, fewer demands, and choosing things that feel comforting and quietly cheering.
Prints have a way of doing just that. A pattern doesn’t need to shout to lift the spirits. Sometimes it’s the repeat, a touch of colour or a motif you recognise that changes how something feels to wear. Clothes have a way of lifting the mood when you least expect it.
That thought stayed with me as I looked through our collection and noticed the printed pieces I instinctively recommend at this time of year. Things with a bit of character that are easy to wear and quietly uplifting.
A FEW PRINTS I’M PARTICULARLY FOND OF THIS JANUARY
I like to return to a Fairisle pullover at this time of year. This familiar heritage pattern, with its softer greens, is made in England by hand-framed knitters, giving it a cosy character that lasts.

Billy the Kit seems politely approving of his printed likeness, although I suspect he’ll be more interested in sitting on the finished copies than admiring them.
January doesn’t need grand gestures. A creative moment, a warm cup of tea, or a favourite piece of clothing with a bit of pattern and personality can be quite enough.
